Just another blog about nostalgia for wax and baseball cards

My first pack of baseball cards

My first pack of baseball cards wasn’t a pack of Topps, nor was it a pack of Donruss, Fleer, or Upper Deck. It was a pack of 1992 Conlon Collection, produced under The Sporting News brand but manufactured by Megacards Inc.

The reason? Babe Ruth was sitting in the window of the cellophane pack. At the time I had no clue about the immense overproduction of the cards at the time, nor the fact that this Babe Ruth card, produced maybe within the past year or so, was near worthless. To me, I had to get that Babe Ruth. How amazing would it be to get a Babe Ruth in my first pack of cards.

“Dad,” as I tried to bring him over to the dealer who had these cards. “Dad look at this, this is a BABE RUTH card!” as I held up the pack. My dad was unmoved by my excitement. Why couldn’t he see how important this was? “Dad, I have to get this pack, can I buy it?” My dad looked at the $1 written on the yellow sticky attached to the box that contained the pack which the card that I wanted. He shook his head to mean, “no” but as any kid knows, if you beg long enough you can probably wear your parents down.

Finally, my dad caved in. “Go ask your mother.” So I rushed off to find my mom and after further pleading she let me buy the pack.

As I opened up the cellophane and stared at the Babe Ruth card that had just paid for my college tuition in ten years, a sense of joy ran over me as I tore through the wrapping. Looked through and also found a Ty Cobb. I was excited, but not as much as I was about seeing that Babe Ruth.

Of course now I know that those cards wouldn’t even come close to helping me pay for college. I believe the Babe Ruth is worth a nice lunch or so but I unfortunately didn’t keep it in very good condition because at the time I didn’t think of putting them into even a penny-sleeve. Still the memories of my first pack of baseball cards remains with me to this day.
